John E. Chance was the founder of John E. Chance and Association. Chance’s outstanding contributions to petroleum industry was described “legendary”. A notable achievement among so many was implementing the use of advanced technology STARDIX. The world’s first 24-hour commercial satellite-based positioning system. Chance company was the leader in positioning offshore drilling rigs, production platforms and pipeline lay-barges. He also developed an accurate repository of information on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico which have been an incalculable value to the industry and providing coordinates for moving a rig in deep waters as well as locating subsurface hazards and precise guidance for placement on-site. He was a husband and father. He resided in Lafayette until he demises in 2008. Chance earned the Lagcoe Looey in 2003.
