WOMEN IN ENERGY: Susan Frizzell
Mar 26, 2020
In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, LAGCOE is highlighting women who have been instrumental supporters of our organization.
Meet Susan Frizzell!
How long have you been working for the energy industry?
I have been working in oil and gas for 20 years. But as a second generation oil field worker, I have been immersed in it my entire life.
In what ways has the energy industry had a positive impact on your life and career? Are you happy that you chose this industry?
I don’t think you can find anyone in Louisiana who’s life has not been impacted by oil and gas. Louisiana is one of the top states for oil and natural
gas production; accounts for 20% of the nation’s refining capability; and is home to national oil and natural gas export facilities and strategic petroleum
reserve storage (source: www.eia.gov). I am happy to have chosen this industry because it has given me the opportunity
for knowledge growth surrounding amazing technology, supported me with a camaraderie surrounding an industry that fuels our world, and allowed me to
remain close to the ones I love.
What would you say to young girls today who are considering pursuing a STEM-centric career?
Do what you are passionate about. I have always loved math and science, so engineering was a perfect fit. Even if STEM subjects are not your favorite,
there are other ways to be immersed in technology related fields. Whatever you do, remain a life-long learner.
Did you ever feel like you were at a disadvantage as a woman in a male-dominated industry? How did you overcome that?
I feel that we are all faced with challenges or opposition in life. In my life, I use each new experience as a means for growth no matter if the challenge
was externally induced or self-imposed. Be the best you can be by your own measures. Don’t try to live up to anyone else’s standards.
How are you helping pave the way for other fellow women in the energy industry?
I am President of Adley Services, which is a WBENC certified women-owned engineering firm. We have a higher than average number of women engineers on staff.
We promote family-life balance for all of our employees. We foster mentorship, professional growth, and knowledge sharing.
