Become a Member of Young Professionals of LAGCOE

March 19, 2018

Young Professionals of LAGCOE (YPL) is a group of individuals from the energy industry with the desire to take action to see the industry grow. As the older generation leaves the workforce they take with them a knowledge base built on the experiences of years of service. In addition, there will be a void in the number of professionals who actively represent the interests of our industry. That is where YPL comes in. The group started with a goal to eventually take the reins of LAGCOE’s technical expositions & conferences. The mission of Young Professionals of LAGCOE is to:

Provide career development opportunities to young professionals

With focused LAGCOE efforts on long-term workforce development and education, 2018 promises to be an even more beneficial year for YPL members with many great events planned, including a new cycle of the YPL Mentor Program, which has been successful in connecting countless mentor/mentee pairs and facilitating the important conversations that need to be happening to ensure a pipeline of prepared, qualified oil and gas senior and executive leaders. Mentor Program events will be scheduled quarterly, providing mentor/mentee pairs the opportunity to network as a group, in addition to smaller meetings.

In addition to focusing on those who are already employed in the industry, YPL is continuously working to begin the career development process of Acadiana area high school students with interest in studying and eventually working in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) fields by offering Future Energy Professionals tours of LAGCOE’s technical expositions and conferences, where local high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to be introduced to today’s energy industry via guided tour of the exposition.

LAGCOE is working to reach an even younger audience of students by working alongside South Louisiana Community College to present, “Oil and Gas in Everyday Life,” Summer Camp. Campers in grades 4-6 will learn about how oil and gas are discovered, how they are extracted from the Earth and how they are used to make products we use every day. Campers will participate in daily activities to further understand the topics on the origin of oil and gas, drilling for oil and gas, and refining to use in every day products. The camp will be held at SLCC's New Iberia Campus, 908 Ember Drive, New Iberia, LA 70560, Monday, June 18, 2018 through Friday, June 22, 2018 8:00 am to 12:30 pm.

Promote networking among energy professionals

YPL hosts regular networking events to connect our members. Events vary in style, with some being a typical luncheon event that may include an industry speaker, tying in to our career development focus, whereas others may involve a night out at the baseball park or a social before a community event.

New for 2018, YPL will be hosting a family-friendly event at the Lafayette Science Museum. In 2017, LAGCOE worked alongside the University of Louisiana at Lafayette School of GeoSciences and the Lafayette Science Museum to prepare “Energy Unearthed: The Science of Petroleum Exploration.” This exhibit aims to educate Kindergarten through 12th grade students and teachers, as well as oilfield families and the greater Lafayette community about the science, engineering and societal benefits of oil and gas exploration, production and refining. This event will be open to YPL members and their families.

Act as ambassadors to the LAGCOE Education Fund

A top priority of YPL, the LAGCOE Education Fund, a fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana, was established to fund projects and programs that support educational efforts for or about the energy industry.

The annual LAGCOE Sporting Clays Tournament, a major fundraiser for the LAGCOE Education Fund, has raised more than $200,000 over the past five years which has helped to raise funds for scholarships, Endowed Professorships, and much more. Most recently, profits from the 5th annual LAGCOE Sporting Clays Shoot exceeded $25,000 and will be donated to the LAGCOE Education Fund.

Young professionals with ties to the energy industry are invited to join YPL for $50 per year to take full advantage of special pricing for many of these great events as well as access to industry networking, service and career development functions. The membership application can be found at LAGCOE.com/youngprofessionals.
